Adding to the story, Jeff Lotman, CEO of Global Icons, represents the Cagney estate in merchandise dealings. He attempted to sell the Oscar to various Hollywood figures, including John Travolta, for around $500,000, but found no buyers. The upcoming auction at Doyle was a surprise to him.

It's important to note that since 1949, any Oscar recipient or their heirs must first offer the Academy the chance to purchase the award for $1 before selling it. Previous auctions have seen other famous Oscars change hands, such as Clark Gable’s 1934 Oscar for "It Happened One Night," which was purchased anonymously for the Academy by Steven Spielberg, and Harold Russell’s Oscar, acquired by Lew Wasserman for $55,000 to return to the Academy.
